if it is black pipe, be sure you put plumbers putty on it before you cap it. teflon tape or rector seal is best. you caN DO THIS URSELF. if it is copper, it would be best to use a plumber. be sure gas is off before you remove heater. if you do not know how to do dry wall repair, go to ur local home depot or lowe's they have people there who are willing to give you advice and help you get ur material. you could repair it in about an hr. allow the joints time to dry, before you paint or wall paper. good luck.
